I just got an email from the Environmental Science faculty at SMSU telling me that one of my classmates, Brett Thompson, died in a car accident yesterday. It was a head on collision; he was on his way to work that morning, was hit and died in the afternoon around 2:30 pm.
It's hard to be away from home, and hear this sad, sad news. Our program is so small that anything like this is a blow. Of course I have a card ready to go out to his family...but this is something that I wish I was back at school for, with the rest of the kids in my major signing a card along with me. We'd be able to get some closure sharing stories about Brett and talking with each other about it, but for now his memory will have to be savored within us individually until we can process it out together.

I'm so sorry, Katy. That is a hell of a shame; I can't even imagine how his parents are feeling right now. It's good of you to think of his family.
Hi Katie... that is very sad. I think it is good that you are at your favorite place now, and have the Lake and Spirit of the Northern Wilderness to comfort and help. Perhaps dedicating your presentation or project, and other Graduates dedicating their work projects to his memory would be an appropriate way to honor him and provide closure. I'll be seeing you next week for fun and hugs.
Love,
Dad and Theresa
Hi Hon! So sorry for your sad news, wish I had still been there to comfort you. It's hard dealing with this kind of thing when you're so far away--comforting others who knew him as well is part of the healing process! Do your best--your dad had a good idea, a dedication would definitely make you feel better. My time with you was, as always, phenomenal honey. I miss you already and can't wait to see you again! I love you, Momma
Thanks for the support, guys. I got in touch last night with a few classmates and we've at least got a plan for a gift to his family. Keep safe, love you all.
Kate
