following a tolerable weekend...

back to the grindstone at Little Sand Bay, still working on my Podcast about Manitou Island. Aside from the occassional PowerPoint presentation at school, I've never really had to write a piece that was meant to be read aloud. I find myself getting wordy (imagine that) and the words I default to are impossible to string together into a coherent sentence. However, after listening to a few of the NPS Podcasts at other parks, I'm finding 1 in 10 that are as substancial as the one that I am tackling. Most just have a narrator and a 2-3 minute script talking about some feature of the park, such as a campground, historic site or pretty waterfall. In hearing them I sense they feel they are going over and above the call of duty in adding a sound effect. If this project gets off the ground it's going to be pretty cool, having some dialogue, sound effects, and even stories out of the ranger logbook.

so this weekend was far more than tolerable. I had a blast spending the last three days with my mom and boyfriend Charlie (hereafter referred to as "Chuck," since he and my brother share the same first name.) It was one of the better weekends I have had up here; we stayed busy but followed a relaxed agenda throughout. Tuesday held going over to Madeline to moped and putz around town...it's such a fun little place. The mopeding was fantastic--they had just mowed, and so the smell of cut grass and wildflowers permeated the air. When we reached Big Bay the breeze coming in off the lake paired deliciously with the heat of the sun on the island. I did end up getting toasted, as my brand new t-shirt tan lines will show. Ate lunch at the Beach Club and were entertained (or disgusted, I really can't differentiate) by both the greedy ducks coming up to our table to sample our wares, and by the 8-year old boys chasing them up and down the shoreline.

That night held our Little Sand Bay Mid-Summer Soiree; neighbors from the park came down to our backyard and we feasted together on grilled potatoes, buffalo ribs, Jamaican coleslaw, watermelon, dirt cake and other incredible menu items that friends put together for the party. Later that night we played Apples to Apples, and if ANY of my dear readers have yet to experience the comedic delight that game provides, I will gladly borrow it to you. As the game went on we accumulated more players, and by the end twelve of us were competing for the winning cards. Some of the best (sometimes non-winning) pairs of nouns and adjectives: Deadly--leaf blowers. Fragrant--homeless shelters. Organic--large mouth bass. Chuck started slow but he and I ended up tied at 9, only for me to sweep the Deadly green card for a sweet victory. : ) I love that game.

Wednesday was a fun day of sleeping in, going out for brunch at the Egg Toss and then swimming and napping the afternoon away until our Island Princess Grand Tour at 5:45pm. The surprise of the night was a deckhand coming up to me, saying the captain would like to have a word. I knew who was driving and so was delighted to go in and say hi. Since the boat goes by Manitou on the daily grand tour (and frankly, I do miss waving at them every morning and evening) he asked if I would like to tell my bear story over the PA system. Boy, would I mister. It was a lot of fun, and the rest of the tour was great, especially the Devil's Island sea caves. The cruise boat came in close to show us how deep the caves went in, and folks, there is no $40 better spent in the Apostle Islands.

and then this morning, they left. : P but I'll be home in a couple of weeks, and then it will be time to pack up my belongings and head out west.

whoa, did I miss something, Kay? When I get home I will be all shades of wanting to do something with you guys before I go, and I'm planning on staying in touch in many more ways than simply blogging and expecting that to be my only form of communication to the lower 48. : ( I'm not sure what you meant by what you said.
