It's weird, I've started to feel a sense of withdrawl whenever I go more than a couple of days without posting a blog. Sure, I write in my journal and that makes me feel a bit more fulfilled, but since I can type much faster than I can write, it feels better to think as I go and let my fingers spell out the brain diarrhea that I'm trying to process. Like that sentence, for instance. Anyway.
Since Monday my schedule has been jampacked but in a very, very relaxed manner. My friend Amanda came up from Marshall, and boy howdy did we have a good old time. I went to the presentation at HQ on Monday night about the "Mysteries of the Apostle Islands Visitors" and found Amanda out in the parking lot after the talk! We went down to the Bayfield Inn (see previous posts on how amazing a place it is) and while there was no live music that night, comfortable acoustic Jack Johnson meets Bob Marley jazzy stuff was playing. Had a beer and caught up with the latest in -Stro and Marshall gossip (inside joke, sorry) and then went out to Little Sand Bay to talk with Nelda and get some sleep for our big weekend. We stayed busy with mopeding, hiking, beaching, strolling, drinking, visiting, paddling, boating, chatting...all sorts of verbage went on. I was sad when she left, but I'll be home in a week. She and I did decide over this weekend that we're getting matching tats when I get home...you'll just have to wait for pictures. Let's just say the image thoroughly represents our time spent in the Environmental Science program at SMSU very, very accurately.
Since I haven't had the time or desire to get online until today, I got a great email from Curtis with some terrible news. Turns out my college isn't a mile and a half away from his home after all...try ten miles away instead. I'm sure it would be a great bike ride during the fall months, but a ten mile hike uphill both ways in a blizzard to get to school in the winter? That could pose a problem. However, we'll figure it out and I'm sure everything will work out alright. After all, I am arriving on the 10th of August and I have until the 25th to get stuff straightend out. I'm not worried yet. What good would that do, fretting now? Like I can do anything about it here. Curtis and I have been emailing options back and forth, and we changed the rent agreement to a month-by-month basis in case I get hooked up with someone considerably closer to the farm. I feel very, very indebted to Curtis for all of his help in my move up, and hopefully when I arrive in AK I will somehow be able to return all of the favors he's bestowed upon a kid he hasn't even met yet.
Last night I went over to a friend's house to visit and ended up raiding his bookshelf of four titles that I'm anxious to start. Being the voracious reader that I am, I devoured all 14 of the books I brought with me out at Manitou and I've been going back and forth from the library getting new material. The one I've started out of D's collection is Lies My Teacher Told Me, and it's incredible. It's about the inaccuracies, lies and webs of patriotic nonsense that history books are trying to teach K-12'ers. Love it. I also borrowed Naked, by David Sedaris and I've started that as well.
Dad and Theresa came in last night and it was so good to see them. On my way to Duluth with Amanda yesterday I saw them drive past me on their way out here to the Bay, and so it was good to come back home to have them here! We chatted and I enjoyed a blueberry pastry they'd picked up along the way, and of course their rat terrier, Scooter is loving the campground. Tomorrow night Dad is cooking for the group and I'll go over to eat with them, but for now they're doing their thing with the Paddle Pushers and I have to work. I wanted to get out on a boat in a bad way today...there was a park boat going to Cat and about 14 other islands that I wanted to hop on, but I deferred the invite in order to finish a few projects that I'd been working on for Susan. I don't want to leave any loose ends after I take off...it'll be a while before I get back to this beautiful area once I'm gone.

Hi Peanut! One thought, if I can sell your car in the next few weeks, that would give you some money to buy some form of transportation? (snowmobile, dogsled (: who knows!!! Also, there may be students in your classes who will need to get to school and may be close to you. I'm sure they'd appreciate some extra gas money from you?
Forget I said sell the car!!! You'll need it next week when you return to Bayfield for the summer (: Don't worry Peanut, between you, Curtis, etc. it will work out. I'd bet there's students living in or near Palmer, going to classes with you that would appreciate a little extra money for gas!!! Talk to you soon!
Ah, a tattoo. Once the choice of the true rebel to set themselves apart from society. Now, a fashion accessory. Tomorrow, an embarrassment. Choose wisely.
Trust me, it's going to be something that will always be near and dear to my...well, brain.
That's a good idea, Ma. Once I get set up with class buddies, that may work out. : ) LOVE!
Lies My Teacher Told Me is an awesome read. I read it in Fall of '02 for a class in college. I ended up TA'ing that same class for 3 more years it was taught so well.
I'm out of my head with too much Left BAnk (: I meant you'll need your car next SUMMER when you go back to Bayfield. LOL. Love you, Momma and yes, it will work out!
Oh I KNOW, Alyson. The book is phenom! I wish it would have been a textbook in any of the history classes I took. : P
